Mineral springs in Marienbad

The town of Mariánské Lázně is mainly known for its spa and natural mineral springs. There are around 100 mineral springs containing carbon dioxide and mineral salts that bubble to the surface in Mariánské Lázně and its surroundings, with water taken and used from 53 of these. These are cold ferrous acidulous waters of differing chemical composition.

The spa industry in Mariánské Lázně in the Czech Republic has a great tradition. Spa care here was always built on modern medical procedures and scientific knowledge about the use of natural resources, meaning gas, mineral waters and peloids (mud and different types of peat).

Kings, composers and great thinkers have all been looked after here. And they knew why. A wide range of diseases are treated here, all under the supervision of top, professionally-trained staff. Many guests to Mariánské Lázně also make regular visits as a means of prevention. A considerable number of treatment procedures focus on the use of natural carbon dioxide, which can be described without fear of exaggeration as the local natural wealth. There are even treatments that you can try only in the picturesque surroundings of this spa town.
Mariánské Lázně is one of the spas in the Czech Republic with the highest number of indications. This is because springs having very varied chemical composition bubble to the surface within a relatively small area. One type of treatment specific to Mariánské Lázně in the Czech Republic is treatment of diseases of the urinary tract.

Main diseases treated

  • Diseases of the locomotor system
  • Diseases of the kidneys and urinary tract
  • Respiratory diseases
  • Metabolic diseases
  • Gynaecological diseases
  • Oncological diseases
  • Digestive system disease
 Mineral Springs

Cold carbonic acidulous waters of a temperature between 8 and 10 °C spring in Mariánské Lázně and are then used for various procedures, mostly drinking treatments and carbonic baths. The carbon dioxide in these springs is used for gas baths and injections. Waters which are less mineralised are bottled and sold as table water.

Peat is adapted for curative purposes and then used for curative poultices and packs.

The most commonly used curative springs:

Augustin Spring and Edward Spring

Both springs reach the surface in front of Hotel Cristal on Hlavní třída (Main Street) and are drawn from a depth of around 70 m close to Ferdinand Colonnade. Chemically-speaking, the water consists of hydrogen carbonate, sulphur and sodium, making it a very strongly mineralised natural cold acidulous water. It has a high content of calcium, magnesium and iron.

The water helps treat the following diseases:

  • It neutralises gastric juices.
  • It reduces hyperacidity.
  • It improves the sensitivity of tissue to insulin.
  • Constipation – it accelerates intestinal peristalsis.
  • Diverticulosis of the intestines
  • It has an effect on inflammations of the urinary tract.
  • Urolithiasis
  • It has a diuretic effect.
  • Gout
  • Conditions following urological operations
Forest Spring
Lesní pramen
Forest Spring is found in the park behind the theatre. Its waters can be sampled in the Classicist Pavilion by Třebízký Stream. The spring produces mineral water that is rich in bicarbonate and sodium. It acts as a mucolytic, meaning that it releases phlegm from the respiratory tract. The main problem with chronic bronchitis is that patients are unable to expectorate – Forest Spring helps them do so. Patients that have hypertension or heart problems in addition to bronchitis may not drink too much water from Forest Spring. The solution is that such patients use Forest Spring predominantly in the form of inhalation. The water from Forest Spring can be used to break down uric acid kidney stones, although caution is required since other kidney stones will grow. Forest Spring is also ideal for patients with stomach problems, mainly increased acidity in the stomach.

  • Respiratory diseases
  • Diseases of the kidneys and urinary tract
  • Digestive system diseases

Cross Spring

Cross Spring is the oldest spring in Mariánské Lázně. You will find it in the Cross Spring Pavilion on the colonnade. Dr. Nehr, who brought Mariánské Lázně to the world of spas, mainly used Cross Spring in his treatments. The water is very salty and very strongly mineralised. In fact, it contains 10 grams of mineral salt per litre. Cross Spring is used for diseases of the gall bladder, liver and pancreas and mainly to combat constipation. Patients suffering from problems with pressure and the heart must always consult a doctor before using Cross Spring because this very salty water retains water in the body and is not therefore suitable for hypertension and heart problems.

Rudolf Spring
Rudolfův pramen
You will find Rudolf Spring in the Rudolf Spring Pavilion in Úšovice and in the Cross Spring Pavilion on the colonnade. The spring produces an entirely unique mineral water. It is well-known that Rudolf Spring is mainly used for inflammatory diseases of the urinary tract. The water from the spring contains a large amount of calcium and magnesium, but very little sodium. This water is ideal for treating older clients because the high calcium content acts favourably against osteoporosis. Magnesium is excellent for the work of nerve cells, heart cells and muscle cells and is a natural antioxidant. The low content of sodium is beneficial as a result of the fact that it does not retain water in the body. The water from Rudolf Spring was mostly prescribed in the past for diseases of the kidneys.

  • Diseases of the locomotor system
Carolina Spring
Karolinin pramen
You will find Karolina Spring in the Karolina Spring Pavilion and in the Cross Spring Pavilion on the colonnade. Karolina Spring produces mineral water that contains lots of magnesium, although less than Rudolf Spring. The water here also contains 2.5 times more sodium than Rudolf Spring. Karolina Spring, named New Spring when Dr. Nehr was active here, was fed into the colonnade again at the end of the last century. Its water is mainly used for urological patients, for kidney stones, particularly when we are unsure of the composition of these kidney stones.

Ambrose Spring
Ambrožův pramen
You will find Ambrose Spring in the little park beneath the Central Spa. The water from the spring is a simple acidulous water with high iron content. It was previously used mainly for anaemia arising from a lack of iron. There are now a variety of tablets or injections to deal with anaemia, meaning that Ambrose Spring is not as widely used. However, its waters are very useful in treating phosphate kidney stones. One interesting tradition is linked to Ambrose Spring, in that it is said that Goethe regularly drank a lot of the water from Ambrose Spring on his visits to Mariánské Lázně. It was at that time too that Goethe fell in love for the final time, with Ulrike von Levetzow. Legend has it that Goethe was full of energy at that time precisely because of the treatment. That is why English-speaking guests refer to this spring as the Spring of Love, the Germans call it Quelle der Liebe, the Russians Istochnik ljubi and the Czechs Pramen lásky. So whoever wants to fall in love in Mariánské Lázně should certainly drink from Ambrose Spring.

Ferdinand Spring

You will find Ferdinand Spring on the Ferdinand Spring colonnade in Úšovice. The water here is very strongly mineralised, having a mineral salt content of more than 10 grams per litre. It is so salty that it was in the past used to make “Teplá” or “Mariánské Lázně” digestive salts. It is still used to this day. A drinking treatment using the water from this spring must first be approved by a doctor.
